The third in a series, “The Razorback Family: Generations,” will premiere during the 2010 Pride of Arkansas Tour in February. Produced by UA Productions and the Arkansas Alumni Association, the video features the work of University of Arkansas students Clint Fullen ’10, Joel Eikenberry ’10, Erin Gilleece ’07, ’10 and Kelly Brophy ’13.

You may see people you recognize in the video as University of Arkansas graduates share memories of their alma mater and what it means to be a Razorback while historical campus photos flash on the screen. One graduate tells of her family, which boasts five generations of University of Arkansas alumni.

The video is part of the 30-minute program at each of the 47 stops across Arkansas and in chapter areas of Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri. This year’s journey will include an added stop in Hope, and three separate events in the Little Rock area, giving those residents more convenient options.

Find a Tour Stop Near You Today!

While the goal of the tour is to celebrate the Pride of Arkansas – our current and future alumni, this is also your opportunity to learn more about what’s happening at the University of Arkansas and the Arkansas Alumni Association. Plus, you will have the chance to connect with alumni who live in your area. And, of course, no Alumni event would be complete without Calling the Hogs.

The kick-off event will be at the Arkansas World Trade Center in Rogers on Feb. 1, and the grand finale is scheduled for Feb. 26 at the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House in Fayetteville. Even if there’s no tour stop in your hometown, we encourage you to find one near you, bring your family and friends, and come join us at any of the Pride of Arkansas Tour stops.

The following is a guest post by Angela Williams, Associate Director of Student Development at the University of Arkansas Career Development Center. Angela supports career advising, PDI coaching, mentoring and several other programs to help you make the most of your career.

It is nearly impossible these days to view any type of news show without hearing unemployment rates are at an all time high-10% according to the latest reports. For 20- to 24-year-olds, the news is even more dire. The jobless rate rose four-tenths of a percent to 16% in November (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010). And data from the Labor Department show that the unemployment figure for college graduates in this age group was 10.6% in the third quarter — the highest since early 1983 and more than double the rate for older college-educated workers.

For the Class of 2010, hiring continues to slide. Employers expect to hire about 7 percent fewer graduates during 2009-10 than they did in 2008-09 (NACE Research: Job Outlook 2010).

Despite the economic conditions, with careful planning and preparation, you can be successful in the job search. However, it is critical to know and possess the skills employers value and to know how to market those skills. Here are some tips and tools to help you market your skills in this time of economic uncertainty.

Revise your resume and cover letter to ensure they highlight your skills and accomplishments. Focus on what you can contribute to the employer, not what you want from the job. Ensure that your experience statements demonstrate major accomplishments rather than routine tasks/duties. Use numbers and percentages to reflect that you are a person who gets results.

Take the time to adapt your resume and cover letter to each position. Don’t make the mistake of sending the same resume for every position. Read the job description for each position. Take note of the key skills and qualifications preferred and/or required. Does your resume reflect those skills and qualifications? Make it easy for employers to see how you would be the right fit for the position.

Update your account with the Arkansas Alumni Career Experience; Visit this site often

Look for networking opportunities. The Internet is great, but 65 percent of jobs are found through networking. The best place to start networking is with the people who know you best: your family, friends and other close contacts. Call, email and set up informal chats with everyone you know who might have some advice or job leads to offer-including your parents, grandparents and older siblings or cousins. The more people you talk to, the more eyes will be on the lookout for openings that fit your criteria.

Set up informational interviews. Don’t ask for a job. Ask for information about a particular field or for suggestions for additional contacts. Remember, the UA Alumni Association has thousands of members in various professions across the nation.

Use web-based networking sites cautiously. Reputable sites can be very helpful for networking and job search, but share information prudently.

Attend area career / job fairs. Attend with the idea of expanding your professional network and increasing your knowledge of job opportunities.

Send a thank-you note as soon as possible after all contacts. If well presented, a thank-you note is a courtesy that can set you apart from other candidates and enhance your image with the organization. The note should be sent immediately after every contact.

Appropriate attire is a must. Men, to be safe always wear a conservatively colored suit and tie. Women, a conservatively colored suit or dress is also appropriate. Men and women should avoid wearing too much cologne or perfume. Your hair should be clean and well-groomed. Shoes should be polished and coordinate with your suit or dress.

Know that most employers’ expectations start with a foundation of integrity, trust, and ethical behavior. Add a positive attitude, a smile on your face, a good work ethic, and a professional appearance, and you’re on your way to a successful career.

Skills Employers Value

Communication skills, Strong work ethic, Initiative, Interpersonal skills (relates well to others), Problem-solving skills, Teamwork skills (works well with others), Analytical skills, Flexibility/adaptability, Computer skills, Detail-oriented, Leadership skills, Technical skills, Organizational skills, Self-confidence, Tactfulness, Friendly/outgoing personality, Creativity, Strategic planning skills, Entrepreneurial skills/risk-taker, Sense of humor

FRiDAY’S location has unexpectedly closed its doors as of Monday, December 14, 2009. Unfortunately, this means that the Arkansas Alumni Association’s member only discount at the Fayetteville T.G.I. FRiDAY’S location is no longer valid.

The Alumni Association’s thoughts are with those that have found themselves unemployed around the holiday season this year as businesses close due to difficult economic times.

As we strive to serve you better, we hope you will utilize these other great member benefits to save this holiday season and throughout the year.

The Arkansas Alumni Association is ensuring more University of Arkansas students receive scholarship money through a new need-based scholarship fund.

As of today, April 13, 2009, we have reached $41,255.

As of May 1, 2009, we have reached $46,762.

Update:
As of today, November 23, 2009, we have reached $72,203. Eleven need-based scholarships have been awarded thanks to membership dues.

That figure includes a generous contribution from Ginger Graham, CEO and president of Amylin Pharmaceuticals, who serves on the Alumni Association’s National Board of Directors. Upon learning about the need-based scholarship fund, she quickly responded with the gift to encourage others to join and donate to the program.

Most of the scholarship money, however, is raised through Association memberships. With each annual “Pride” membership renewal, $5 goes toward the need-based scholarship fund. From the newly created three-year “Passion” memberships, $15 is put toward need-based scholarships. It’s just one more reason your membership in the Arkansas Alumni Association is so important.

Help us continue to grow that dollar amount and make a college education possible for more students.

Prominent alumnus Lt. Gen. Martin R. Steele, B.A.’74, U.S. Marine Corps (retired), will return to the University of Arkansas campus on Nov. 12-14 as the Arkansas Alumni Association’s inaugural Johnson Fellow.

Endowed by Dr. Jeff Johnson, B.A.’70, and his wife, Marcia, the Johnson Fellows program was created for the specific purpose of bringing esteemed alumni back to the University of Arkansas campus to engage and inspire students. Steele, who resides in Tampa, Fla., will share his extraordinary story and expertise while addressing students in business, history and broadcast journalism classes and interacting with members of Military Past and Present, Leadership Walton participants, R.E.A.L. Razorbacks and Student Alumni Board members.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., and raised in Fayetteville, Steele enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1965. He rose from private to three-star general, serving three tours of duty on two continents, with tenure as the longest-serving chief operating officer in the history of the Marine Corps. He culminated his military career as the deputy chief of staff for plans, policies and operations at the headquarters of the U.S. Marine Corps in Washington, D.C., in August 1999.

Steele has broad experience in establishing and managing cutting-edge strategic policies and programs. He is a recognized expert in the integration of all elements of national power — diplomatic, economic, informational and military — with strategic military war plans and has served as an executive strategic planner and policy director in multiple theaters across Asia. His extraordinary 34-year career was chronicled as one of three principles in the award-winning military biography Boys of ’67, by Charles Jones.

Upon his retirement from active duty in 1999, Steele served as president and chief executive officer of the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, the largest naval museum in the world. Under his leadership, they adopted the mission statement to “honor our heroes, educate the public, and inspire our youth about the price of freedom.”

This creative branding strategy resonated with all audiences and was the early catalyst for the transformation of the Intrepid from just another New York City destination location to the near icon status it enjoys today among educators, historians, international visitors and military veterans. Shortly after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Steele invited the FBI to the Intrepid to conduct their investigations. Within 48 hours, Intrepid was once again in service as the temporary headquarters for more than 750 FBI agents.

Currently, Steele is chairman and CEO of Steele Partners Inc., a strategic advisory company and president and CEO of Uncommon Leadership LLC, a leadership consulting company. These companies’ shared mission is to develop uncommon leaders in Fortune 500 companies who understand how to translate strength of character and high ethical behavior into bottom line success. Through Uncommon Leadership, Steele has led a philanthropic transition program to assist exiting Marines into private sector jobs throughout the country. The program is offered at no cost to the Marine participants, the Marine Corps or to the companies that provide employment opportunities for Marines completing the program. He is conducting research for an expansion of the program to reach the other services over the next year because of the overwhelming feedback from participants, stating the program had a positive “life-changing” impact on their lives.

Steele takes pride in giving back to the University of Arkansas, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in history and was recognized as a Distinguished Graduate of the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. He also holds master’s degrees from Central Michigan University, Salve Regina College and the Naval War College.

Married to the former Cynthia Bayliss of Little Rock, the father of three grown children and the grandfather of three children, Steele serves proudly on half a dozen boards across the country. Hembree Alumni House was the place to be prior to the South Carolina vs. Arkansas game! Although it was the second early morning game you cannot squash Razorback spirit as members and their guests came out bright and early to Call those Hogs.

Around 700 Razorback fans made plans to enjoy an early morning breakfast with us as we served sausage, eggs, bacon and more. Of course, no Alumni Association Pre-Game Rally would be complete without a visit from the Razorback cheerleaders, Pom Squad and as it is quickly becoming tradition the Razorback spirit band. Then it’s just a short walk across the street to Razorback Stadium to watch the Hog take on the Gamecocks.

That number set a new regional and state record for the third-consecutive year.

Following the 2009 Homecoming theme, “A Red & White Affair: Celebrating 100 Years of Razorback Pride,” the week-long schedule of events leading up to the victorious Eastern Michigan vs. Arkansas game carried on a tradition that officially began in 1922. Throughout the week, fraternities and sororities, registered student organizations and residence halls competed for points. The Homecoming winners were announced during the football game, where Kimberly L. Smith, a health science major from Hot Springs, was crowned queen. She was escorted by Associated Student Government Vice President Andrew LeNarz and the four members of the court – Mattie Bookhout, Locke Isaacson, Alexandra Kosmitis and Katie Sellers – accompanied her on the field. Her candidacy was sponsored by the Kappa Iota Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Earlier in the week rain moved Hot Dogs for Homecoming indoors, but it was still a success as all 2,000 hot dogs donated by Tyson Foods were handed out. That afternoon, the 16th Annual Unity Step Show, hosted by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., once again was a huge hit throughout the community. With 17 teams, representing National Panhellenic Council and Inter-Fraternity Council chapters across campus, the competition was impressive for a large crowd of sorority and fraternity members, family and friends who filled up half of Barnhill Arena. Each team is coached by a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in order to build and perfect the best step show. The show awards the top three teams within Panhellenic and IFC, with all teams fighting for bragging rights for the next year. This year, first and second place NPC teams were separated by only one point.

The Pigskin Classic was rescheduled to Wednesday evening after a wet and rainy Tuesday at the University of Arkansas intramural fields. More than 75 teams participated in the annual 3-on-3 flag football championship hosted by Intramural Recreation and Sports. Teams competed for the championship and chance to be the male and female teams to travel to Atlanta, representing the University in the national intramural 3-on-3 flag football tournament. This year on the men’s side, the champions of the fraternity division, Sigma Chi, defeated the champions of the residence halls division in order to earn the trip to Atlanta. They will be joined by the ladies of Chi Omega from the women’s division. Each battled through five games in the muddy and wet intramural fields to emerge victorious.

Homecoming expanded its community service and philanthropy efforts this year by adding the Up ’Til Dawn Movie Night to its schedule and points competition. On Thursday night, the Up’Til Dawn committee and members of Student Alumni Board teamed up with the athletics department to open up Bud Walton Arena to all students for a movie night to raise money and awareness for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. More than 1,600 students participated in the event which included a message on the importance of giving. Chi Omega had the highest percentage of participation, followed by Delta Delta Delta, and in third place, Kappa Delta. There were also representatives of the Student Ambassadors, Beta Upsilon Chi and many of the residence halls present.

Other competitions throughout the week included the cook-off, in which student groups showed off their culinary skills for three judges, the University Programs talent show, the lawn decoration contest and the banner competition. The night before the football game, Dickson Street was lined with alumni, students and Razorback fans, who watched the parade and then headed to the Greek Theater for the pep rally.

Tell us about your favorite Homecoming tradition!

Two words describe the emotions of the 11 outstanding people honored during the 65th annual Alumni Awards Celebration – humble and grateful. The Association’s largest awards dinner was filled with laughter and tears of joy as each accepted his or her award on Oct. 30 at the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House.

During their remarks, alumni were quick to credit their faculty and classes at the University of Arkansas, for their accomplishments. Perhaps Larry Bittle BSBA’71, president of the Larry Bittle Insurance Agency who received the Community Service Award, said it best. “There’s no doubt that because of the education I received here, doors were opened and opportunities presented.”

Lewis Epley BSPA’61 LLB’61, a retired attorney, banker and businessman who received the Andrew J. Lucas Alumni Service Award, reminded the audience to “connect the dots” and remember who helped get you where you are.

Brandon and Elizabeth Barnes Keener, both BA’97, an actor and casting director, said they are always proud to tell people in Hollywood about their Arkansas roots. They added that the University’s drama department helped them prepare and train to work with actors and others in the entertainment industry from top universities around the country.

Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Don Pederson has the dedication to the University of an alumnus and now he officially is as he received the Honorary Alumni Award. “It is a privilege to serve the University and be part of its history,” said the 37-year University employee.

For Faculty Achievement Award recipients Laurent Bellaiche, a physics professor, and Dub Ashton, associate professor of marketing and logistics, the University of Arkansas has become home. Both told the story of moving their families to Arkansas for a short time that has turned into a decade for Bellaiche and 29 years for Ashton.

Economics professor Amy Farmer, who oversees the interdepartmental Belize Project, said she is “very fortunate to be at the University of Arkansas, where a program like this is possible. It’s the commitment to students that led faculty to try something different.”

The final presentations of the evening were three Citation of Distinguished Alumni awards, given to alumni who represent the University’s tradition of excellence.

Cordia Harrington BSHE’76, president and CEO of the Tennessee Bun Company, said the University of Arkansas gave her “roots and wings” to become a successful entrepreneur, who learned faith and persistence.

Art Meripol BA’77, senior travel photographer for Southern Living magazine, admitted that even though he is a Texas native, he always tells people he’s from Arkansas. “I love this university, and I love this state.”

Gov. Mike Beebe JD’72 concluded his remarks by saying education is the key to Arkansas moving forward and everyone contributes in their own way. Without the law degree he obtained at the University, he said he wouldn’t be able to contribute as a senator, attorney general and now governor.

The Student Alumni Board was able to collect 1717 units of blood during the 2009 University of Arkansas Homecoming blood drive.

“This is the third consecutive year that University of Arkansas Family has managed to break the record for units of blood donated during the Homecoming blood drive. This student run tradition is a testament to the level of community involvement and commitment that our students share in making the world a better place.” ~ Mike Macechko

The Alumni Association partnered with the Enhanced Learning Center to offer academic workshops for new Legacy Scholarship recipients on Oct. 13-15 at the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House. Legacy Scholars receive a waiver of non-resident tuition and must maintain a 2.75 GPA for renewal each year. The Alumni Association recognizes that the key to retaining the Legacy Scholarship is establishing a strong GPA the first semester.

Therefore, shortly after mid-term grades were reported we held our first Alumni Association academic workshop. Anne Raines, associate director of the ELC, led the one-hour workshop and provided some great insight on developing structure during the “unstructured” college experience.

The greatest challenge facing new freshmen is the amount of free time you have outside of class. You need to make wise decisions every day that will help move you toward your goal of attaining at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA and keeping your Legacy Scholarship.

Habits you form in college will really set the stage for the rest of your professional and personal lives, so now is the time to focus on developing smart strategies. Raines reviewed some tips that really can make a difference:

Use the Quality Writing Center (Kimpel 315) for all papers! Did you know that you can even submit a paper on-line for review by a tutor?

Scan or skim your text before class to establish a framework for the day’s lecture.

Give your instructor your full attention. Sit in the “T” zone (1st two rows + the center of the room).

Try out the Cornell note-taking method.

Review your notes daily.

Know your learning style and make the right adaptations to enhance your ability to learn.

Set a study schedule.

Plan out the remainder of your semester! Be ready for the final exam.

Most importantly, be sure to contact the ELC if you need help. Staff in the ELC can offer assistance with everything from test-taking anxiety and note-taking strategies to tutoring and life skills. Visit the ELC online for a comprehensive list of free tutoring and supplemental instruction.

Historically, students who take the time to attend the one-hour workshop have higher GPA’s and are more likely to qualify for renewal of their scholarship compared to students who do not attend.

The Alumni Association and the University want you to succeed and remain a Legacy Scholarship recipient. There are many resources available on campus to assist you and all it takes is making an effort to seek help. Don’t be afraid to ask!

We wish all our Legacy Scholars much success this year!

Since July 2008, the Arkansas Alumni Association has been operating under a new strategic plan. The plan seeks to improve the Association’s ability to connect and serve all University of Arkansas alumni and friends by providing products and services that are segmented by geographic territory and stage of life. The first phase of this plan was to implement geographic territories that serve as a way to segment the market and deliver programs. A reorganization of the Association’s programming unit in addition to the development of segmented markets has been in operation since the plan’s implementation in 2008.

When the results of the 2009 Alumni Attitude Study were received, data analysis was requested by the new geographic territory model. While the Association’s preliminary research indicated that the geographic segmentation was needed to more effectively relate to alumni and friends, the results of the Attitude Study are providing additional information for the Association and its volunteer leadership to utilize in making decisions in regard to our work with alumni and friends.

The newest area of focus to the Association’s programming efforts is a focus on our international alumni (both those living internationally and individuals from foreign countries that study at the University of Arkansas). The study results indicated that international alumni have more pronounced needs from the Association related to their connection to the University and fellow alumni. While our traditional alumni from Arkansas and nearby states have pre-built networks, many of our international alumni are building their networks during their educational experience. The results have also confirmed that our international alumni need unique forms of electronic communication to keep up with University news and events in a timely manner. We also have to provide ways for international alumni to be engaged and serve as University ambassadors abroad to overcome their distance from alumni activities and events.

Another area of positive growth for the Association this past year has been a focus on the alumni and friends who are our faculty and staff at the University. This group of stakeholders has a high degree of investment in the institution and as confirmed with the Alumni Attitude Study results, they expect targeted programs, services and benefits to their unique needs. This group of individuals commits their professional careers to the University and its success, so messages of being connected to show support do not resonate with this market as much as in our other territories. We also learned that faculty and staff members feel that their time is the largest barrier they have to participation, so Association activities for them must be convenient to their work day.

Our fastest growing territory is Northwest Arkansas. With over 24,000 alumni calling the Benton and Washington County areas home, the Association is presented with unique challenges in delivering a unique product that is relevant to a market that is highly exposed to the University through personal connections, localized media and Razorback athletics. The Alumni Attitude Study results indicate this market views time and their family/job commitments are the largest barriers to participation in events. There is also a desire for alumni in this area to receive more information about activities on campus in which they (and their families) can participate. In regard to membership, this market more than any other, has an expectation that the impact of their membership needs to be visible.

The Alumni Attitude Study results also shared insight into our alumni from Arkansas and those residing out-of-state in regard to messaging and program outreach. The results show that alumni want to be connected and informed but view the opportunity to be engaged as a localized one through geographic chapter or by returning to campus. The Association is examining how to overcome the distance barrier so that alumni across the state and nation feel connected to their University of Arkansas Family external to the presence of a local chapter.

The results as analyzed by each territory are available for viewing online. Over the coming year, the staff and volunteer leaders will be analyzing the results and utilizing this information to formulate more effective approaches to serving alumni. We welcome your feedback and comments about how the Association can achieve this for you, based upon where you live.

Playing off the 100th anniversary of the Razorback, the 2009 theme for Homecoming is “A Red & White Affair: Celebrating 100 Years of Razorback Pride.”

Delegates from all over campus attended, representing Greek chapters, registered student organizations and residence halls. Each received a Homecoming packet of information, which includes the schedule of events, points list, rules and explanations for each event, as well as the registration and design forms for all competitions. Speakers included AJ and Penny Bellard, who explained all rules regarding the Homecoming parade; Alicia Stoll of Intramural & Recreation Sports, who discussed the Pigskin Classic; Sandy Goodwin, representing the American Red Cross and the Homecoming Blood Drive; and Carter Ford, who announced the Up Til’ Dawn Movie Night. Finally, Alexis Hurdle, assistant director of Greek Life, was present to announce the pairings for all Greek chapters. Senior Rachel Hope, president of Pi Beta Phi sorority, explained, “Students look forward to the announcement of Homecoming pairings all semester. We are all excited to hear the groups.” The following pairings were announced:

Pi Beta Phi, Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI), Alpha Gamma Rho, Phi Iota Alpha

Chi Omega, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Phi Epsilon

Delta Delta Delta, Sigma Nu, Kappa Alpha Psi

Kappa Kappa Gamma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma

Zeta Tau Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Pi

Kappa Delta, Sigma Chi, Zeta Phi Beta

Alpha Omicron Pi, Kappa Sigma, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha

Alpha Delta Pi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Farmhouse, Delta Sigma Theta

Gregson and Gibson Halls

Futrall and Holcombe Halls

Competition kicks off with the Homecoming Blood Drive on October 21 and 22, with all other events occurring the next week. Homecoming culminates with the parade and pep rally on October 30 and the announcement of the Homecoming court and queen, and competition winners at the game on Saturday when the Razorbacks play Eastern Michigan. Check out the full schedule of Homecoming events online today.
